INSTINCT

A/W 2027 Fashion, Textiles & Colours

The time has come to embrace that inner voice which defines our most intimate and primitive instincts. To be rooted and conscious of all living beings, inclusion and belonging. Like cats, we will smell danger and figure out alliances, like dogs we will safeguard our loved ones, playing hide and seek, and like birds, we will sing to each other about picking up sticks to build our nests. As sheep, we will flock together for comfort, and as cuddles, we will appease our pain. Times are dire and danger is imminent, with the destruction of democracies and the abandonment of respect for our own kind. Fashion, colours, shapes and textiles reflect these instinctive and ritualistic rules to protect and prosper, to fight for equality and forsake the self in artistic and idealistic practice, gaining confidence to live life as it was meant to be. With the lifesaving instinct of aesthetic activism.

EVERY ROOM WILL BE A LIVING ROOM

2027 Design & Interiors Forecast

“Every room will be a living room” was the answer that flapped out of Lidewij Edelkoort when she was recently asked what the future of the living room would be? Afterwards, she reflected on that impromptu response and understood she was on to something. And indeed, this trend forecast argues that all rooms will become living rooms, whether it is the walk-in cupboard or the water closet, the entrance hall or the windowsill, the hobby hub or the family room, the lounge patio or the swimming pool. Since the sky is the limit of our imagination, people will want to live in small niches and decorative doorways, in a private boudoir or an esoteric bureau, in a live-in kitchen or a competitive playroom. Giving life to all spaces, making life an exceptional style, introducing life to new designs, colours, materials and finishes for 2027 and beyond.

PROUD SOUTH CRAFT

New Design Talent from the Global South

Through the expressive lens of contemporary craft, embraced as a tool for transformation, this presentation highlights furniture, art, lighting, textiles, ceramics, woodwork, basketry, stonework and glasswork of the Global South. Craft is the direct link humans have with their ancestors and the beginning of civilisation. An irreversible revival of craft today reflects society’s desire for authenticity and tactility, to complement our modern mode of living, but more so, craft embodies our urgent need to affirm the power of humans over machines and artificial intelligence. Hence, the idea of an activist counterculture emerges, manifesting with palpable proof that the made-by-hand can become a Proud South revolutionary movement to reckon with, celebrating the creative voices from the southern parts of the planet that are redefining craft, design and culture.

Lidewij Edelkoort is arguably the world's most renowned trend forecaster, working in industries from fashion to food, design, architecture, tech, communication, automotive and retail.
