ILLUSTRATION AUTUMN / WINTER 2025-26

Illustration - Colour trend A/W 25/26

As a case in point, colour is out to prove its hegemony above and beyond all other parameters of fashion and design. Having been banned, shunned and even vilified for a quarter of a century, now during the most difficult timeframe since the Second World War, colour will take revenge by drawing up an astounding picture of wild creativity, steering fashion design out of control. A great creativity illustrated by sketching, drawing, collages, cartoons and engravings, moving beyond and abstracting photography. Introducing posters that allow the word to be part of our world. Talking the language of colour. Several major societal and anthropological movements are gathering to assemble shades of happiness and solidarity. Focusing on empathy and hope, and a radical stance for beauty that will dominate the world of creativity, letting the spirit fly to escape reality. Acting like an overwhelming urge for self-defence. These movements include the powerful stylistic emancipation of all southern countries, the intimate retreat into our childhood, and the focus on disarming outsider art and design, coupled with amateur participation in the creative process.

All these major transformative movements collide to consider colour as the epicentre of expression, from tinted sobriety to bright exuberance. This whirlwind of influences forms tornado-type vortexes able to pull people in to play and participate, with sometimes dizzying visual effects obtained by weaving, dyeing and pattern making. Introducing an activist mentality to a truly sustainable style of much less yet much more beautiful clothes.

SWADDLING AUTUMN / WINTER 2024- 25

Living through the most devastating period since the Second World War is taking its toll and spinning society out of control, leaving deep scars of conflict and mental problems of confusion, especially amongst the youngest generations. The human condition is under impending nuclear war in Europe, a civil war in America and two major conflicts in Asia. The northern half of the planet seems ready to explode, and with it comes a recession, an energy crisis and a pandemic that is still looming around. On top of it all is global warming that creates floods, fires and draughts and threatens to eradicate the human race.

Therefore, design and fashion react and swing in protection mode, wanting to take care and heal, swaddling their collectors, holding tight and caring for people of all ages. Swaddling is usually used to give infants the feeling of the safety they crave after leaving the protective warmth of the womb. The effects of such hermetic wrapping are visible in the overwhelming return of knitwear as a category of its own; no longer just an afterthought, it is a head-to-toe, day-in-day-out, morning-to-evening phenomenon to reckon with. Hibernating while rolled up in sweaters, cardigans and blankets helps the body combat emotional stress and slow down the metabolism in order to use less energy of all kinds. Conditioning us as a survival mechanism.
